About "Real" BDSM

Opinions about "real" or "true" BDSM

Some people want to believe that their knowledge in an area covers the entire area or actually even defines the entire area.

This behaviour is found in BDSM as well, where it is not uncommon to find people stating that they are performing the "real" or "true" BDSM, based on their experience or other "knowledge".

The belief that persons can define "real" or "true" BDSM is actually a good warning sign about them being narrow or shallow in their experience, regardless of how long it is.

This means that they are not aware of or respect the many facets that BDSM may have,
since what is held as "real" and "true" by one person may not be so by another person.

In many cases the beliefs in what BDSM "is" or "should be" is based on what some sole "guru" originally has stated, then propagated by people preferring to learn and cite rather than think and formulate.

As long as a variant of an activity doesn't really damage other people or violate common laws, it can not be objectively deemed superior or inferior compared to any other variant of it.

About Experience

Opinions about experience in BDSM

Some people assume that they, or someone else, is an expert, just because they have a long or vaste experience of something.

That assumption may be true in many cases, but seldom when it comes to human relations, where every relation is unique, depending both on the involved parties and the interaction between them.

In BDSM, many both dominants and especially submissives say they don't want to get involved with people new to the scene but prefer experienced partners.

BDSM has got many facets, and experience achieved in one or some of those facets is not necessarily the same experience that a new partner is interested in.

The vague expression "experienced in BDSM" may mean knowing how knots should be tied, how maximum pain is inflicted with a whip, or how to most efficiently break someone mentally.

A dominant with 20 years of experience almost solely in whipping may not be the perfect match for a submissive who wants to be mentally controlled and manipulated.

On the other side, a brand new submissive who adores being whipped may be a far better match for the dominant above than a submissive with 20 years experience and love of being mind-fucked.

Both dominants and submissives with many years of experience in the areas they are interested in may be absolute beginners in areas that other dominants and submissives are interested in.

About BDSM Systems

Information about BDSM systems in Second Life

Zindra is a mainland continent, requiring age verification for access, to where LL has forced all adult oriented businesses and public activities in SLfrom other mainland, including BDSM. It also contains a central sim called Zindra.

Restrained Life Viewer (RLV) is a third party SL viewer modified to permit its user to hand over some control over their AV to other users, often used by submissives in BDSM activities in SL.

OpenCollar is one of several, open-source and seemingly the most popular, interfaces in SL to access the features of RLV and other functions, usually as a scripted slave collar, offering menus for control.

Xcite! is one of several systems in SL to simulate sexual excitement, based on a virtual excitement meter and scripted items adding excitement score, doing emotes and animations for the AVs.

LockMeister and LockGuard are systems used to display chains, ropes and similar in SL, to connect e.g. cuffs and anchor points, often combined with systems to limit AV mobility.

Many user-created BDSM items and systems are built to be at least partly compatible with e.g. RLV, OpenCollar, Xcite! and LockMeister/LockGuard, but often offer own or additional functions.

About Second Life

General information about Second Life

Second Life (SL) is a 3D virtual world run by Linden Labs (LL) which, although containing much basic functionality, is more of a platform for building applications and games rather than a finished game.

Users are represented in SL by graphical avatars (AVs), which can interact and may take and alter between many shapes, concerning gender, age and size, human or not.

Users can walk, fly and teleport (TP) in SL, and communicate by text chat (chat), textual actions (emotes), instant messages (IMs), group messages, notecards, voice chat (voice), visual signals and animations.

SL consists of geographically sculpted, tiled regions, each 256x256 meters, called simulators (sims) grouped into continents and islands.

SL mainland continents are groups of sims owned by LL but partly rented as parcels, ranging from 4x4 meters to a full sim, by users or groups.

SL islands are single or grouped sims, owned by LL, but rented and run each in full by a single user or group, allowing them more control.

Items and systems can be built in SL by combining geometrical building blocks called primitives (prims), textures and in-world scripts allowing interactivity and functionality.

Items created by users in SL range from cloth textures and simple, inactive prims worn as attachments by AVs, via vehicles and scientific models, to complex battle and role-playing systems.

Items can be sold or given to other users in SL, with different permissions (perms) on how the new owner can handle them, e.g. make copies or not (copy), transfer them or not (trans), and modify them or not (mod).

Users can get money in SL (Linden dollars, L$) by exchanging from real life (RL) currencies, selling items or services, e.g. being present to seemingly enhance popularity of an area (camping).

Paying (premium) users get a weekly allowance from LL (300 L$/week) and can own parcels on mainland to create and keep buildings and other items on.
